Was Hud filmed in Claude, TX?

On the way back from an antique car show in CA a few months back, I stopped for breakfast a bit SE of Amarillo in Claude, TX. I saw Hud recently on TCM and at the beginning of the movie, there is a scene where a pickup towing a horse trailer crosses a railroad track and then passes through the intersection of US287 and FM1151. Something seemed vaguely familiar about that intersection.

For confirmation, I did a MapQuest search on it and came up with Claude, TX. Already e-mailed Robert Osborne at TCM Archives about this and they couldn't help, but turned me on to this site.

So, anybody know if this is where Hud was filmed? Thanks.

Yes, it was. I live in Amarillo and have a friend who grew up in Claude. He told me that for years, the owners of the farmhouse that served as the Bannon's home had posted a sign out front that asked the sightseers to go away.

As if they could find such desolate terrain in any place but West Texas where the only thing that comes easy is the wind...

yes . HUD was filmed in Claude, Texas. The in town scenes ( drinking/bookstore )anyway. The Ranch is actually about 8 miles southeast of downtown Claude toward Good Night, Texas on highway 287. North side of the road and the railroad tracks. Red roof on farmhouse. This info provided by a local claude police officer that knows the area and history. feb 13, 2005 jrb

Principal photography on-location in Claude, TX took place during the hot, dry summer of 1962 (July - September). My father, a long-time native of nearby Amarillo, TX owned the local grocery store and meat market on the north side of the Armstrong County court house square in Claude. During pre-production and between takes, Bob Hinkle ([email protected]), the 2nd Unit Director and dialogue coach to Paul Newman on "Hud" would bring Newman by my dad's grocery store to shoot the *beep* and sit out on the front stoop drinking old 8 oz. bottles of Coca-Cola with my dad and his clerks/butchers- this is one way Newman caught on to the proper West Texan drawl he used in acting the part of Hud Bannon.

A pristine digitally re-mastered 35-mm print of "Hud" was screened outdoors next to the Gem Theater in downtown Claude, TX on Wednesday evening September 7, 2005 as part of the Austin, TX-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's "Rolling Roadshow" (http://www.originalalamo.com/rrs/frames.asp) tour of the western US in the summer of 2005 - the last stop in the tour.

I was there along with Bob Hinkle and Kinky Friedman - independent candidate for Governor of Texas (2006). Fun was had by all.

The parts of Hud filmed in "town" were filmed in Claude Texas.
Other parts were "at the ranch/ranch house" are in Goodnight Texas about 12 miles South of Claude on TX Hwy 287. Paul Newman was reported to have lost a 6 karat diamond in the canyon during the filming and people have been looking for it ever since. Here's a reference from the University of Texas online.
