Apparently he was too young, small, and pretty to get the great roles he deserved after "Hud". Wiki:

"After that point, much of his roles were limited to television guest appearances. "Being small for his age and a bit too pretty...in his favour as a child...worked against him as an adult", wrote author Linda Ashcroft after talking with De Wilde at a party. 'He spoke of giving up movies until he could come back as a forty-year-old character actor'."

Must have been even tougher career-wise for young actors back then. I loved his performance in this film. It's a shame he couldn't get better work after it.

He probably would have gotten bettter roles if he had lived past the age of 30

I didn't notice that he was small, in Hud. He seemed average-size.
