I know its not a horror but am I the only one who thought this movie was 9/10 stars??????????????????????????????????????????

reply

no, I also thought it was an excellent old gothic horror. very atmospheric and the interior and exterior castle scenes are excellent. The sound is also very creepy and suits the movie perfectly even if my copy has a lot of hiss in the background.

A forgotten gem which fans of 1960s gothic horrors will enjoy.

"Horror" works much better on the big screen; especially the original European pre-title sequence that climaxes with the sudden appearance of the count's disfigured face at the castle turret window (cut in the U.S. release). During the mid-1960s it was half of a double bill released in the U.K.by Compton-Cameo
Films. The other half of the double-bill was Antonio Margheriti's "The Virgin Of Nuremberg"! What a programme!

Watching this as a teenager on a local TV station back in the 1970s didn't do much for me, but having watched the Retromedia DVD twice now, my opinion is much different. I gave it 8 stars, leaning toward 9. I especially love the rich Gothic atmosphere and imagery, more effective in B&W than it would have been in color, and also the score, alternately melancholy and eerie. It does move a bit slowly, and the plot isn't exactly a wow, but these minor criticisms are more than made up for by the incredible locations, cinematography, resultant atmosphere generated, and Alberto DeMartino's sure hand at the helm. A sadly underrated and ignored Italian Gothic horror.
