Question for any Horror Buffs here

Hello all,

This movie is yet the latest film I've watched in what is seeming to be a futile quest to find a Haunted House movie from my childhood so I am wondering if any of you may be able to help me out.

I will give what little details I can remember, I was pretty young at the time but here we go:

-It was a film set in a big Mansion or Castle

-It featured an old white haired women who was a ghost and haunted the place

-She would come at night, chains would rattle to signal her coming, she would kill someone each night I believe, she killed one guy with a mace if I remember

-I am not sure how many occupants there were at the stories beginning, I only know some of them got killed and a young couple for sure survived till the end

-There was an older man, I recall he had some connection to the old woman, maybe a descendant? Maybe her husband, brother, I don't know, but at the very end he confronts here and they struggle as the Mansion/Castle burns to the ground

-It is not "House on Haunted Hill" or "House of Usher"

- I don't know what year it was made, I only know I saw it on TV in the early 80's and we still had a black and white TV at the time so whether it was new enough to be in color or not I don't know.

Thanks in advance to any who may help, I have been searching for this for over 30yrs, watched so many movies I can't begin to recall and I can't find this film.

Could it be The Old Dark House from 1932?

Or maybe it was Rebecca.

reply

I looked into both of those, no luck. Thank you very much for trying, I appreciate it.

reply

Would it be 13 Ghosts from 1960?

reply

That wasn't it but thank you for trying.

reply

Probably isn't this movie, but what about "The Horror of it All" with Pat Boone. Hope this helps, curious to hear one way or another.

reply

I checked it out but that is not the one, thank you anyway for trying.

Hello Question,
Now I'm wondering the name of the movie is!

reply

Might be The House on Skull Mountain (1974)

I thought P.E.T.A. meant People Eating Tasty Animals

reply

Not it unfortunately, but cool movie, like I say, in my quest I'm getting to see a lot good classics. Thanks for trying.

It's not, by any chance, the Holy Grail for cult horror fans: THE GHOST OF SIERRA DE COBRE (1964) is it?

They say only Captain Koenig owns a copy.

No, never heard of that movie, why is the the Holy Grail? Because it's hard to find?

Sounds to me like "Pigeons From Hell," an adaptation of the classic Robert E. Howard short story that was done for the old Thriller TV show.

Here are the similarities:

(1) black and white

(2) haunted and abandoned old southern plantation deep in the woods

(3) haunted by a white-haired old hag who is actually a "zuvumbie," a monster turned into a vicious immortal killer by voodoo.

(4) She kills whoever stays in the house. She attracts them with a song, they walk upstairs, and she cleaves their skull with an ax.

(5) In the film, two brothers have car trouble and decide to stay the night in the house. They have sleeping bags and camp out in the old living room in front of the fireplace.

(6) As the night progresses, we hear eerie singing from upstairs. One of the brothers wakes and follows the song up the staircase. He disappears into the hallway and shrieks. The screams wake up his younger brother.

(7) The younger brother rushes upstairs and as he stands in the shadows, the corpse of his older brother stumbles out holding the ax. His head is split in two. He tries to kill his younger brother, who escapes.

(8) I won't tell you the rest--check it out on Me TV sometime. This seems to be the closest to your description. Hope it helps!

Does the old woman struggle with an old man at the end as the house is burning down? I remember that part specifically. Anyhow, thank you for the reply, I'll check out the movie you suggested and see. Have a Happy Halloween!

reply

No, she doesn't struggle with an old man, but the surviving brother gets the older Sheriff to help him...and they go back to the plantation/mansion at night and have a confrontation with the witch/old lady. The man ends up shooting her, just as she's about to bury another hatchet in the head of the brother (who's under her spell). When he shoots her, she runs back into her lair, and they both find her dead...with the remains of other people she'd killed.

It does fit your story, except for a few instances. It's not a movie, though. It's an episode of Thriller. You should be able to find it on YouTube. Just type in "Pigeons from Hell, Thriller."

Good luck!

reply

I checked it out, had fun watching it, but unfortunately it's not the one. Thanks for trying!

reply

It sounds like it has elements of the Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. That isn't it, is it?

reply

No, I know "Pyscho".

reply

Hush hush sweet Charlotte? But I doubt it's this because she doesn't kill someone every night, she isn't a ghost either even if looks like one. But it's an amazing movie with a big mansion and a crazy lady with white hair, worth watching, Bette Davis is really good.

reply

Or Frightmare from 1974 with a crazy lady who is a murderer and cannibal. This movie is creepy and pretty disturbing for sure, enjoy if you haven't.

reply

And pretty silly too to be honest lol.

reply

I have never seen anything like that and looked on the web for it with no luck. I hope someone has the answer because now I am curious too!

It's a tough one, could have been a TV Movie, or an episode of something, I don't know, I was so young who knows what my mind has altered over the years.
