Spinster in a haunted house

The most relatable part of this movie was the character of Eleanor, a spinster who feels her life is very boring and jumps headlong into the first adventure that fate pushes her way. She seems a bit frightened, even disgusted, of the events that happen to her in the haunted house. But it is clear that she welcomes these events, because her past life is far worse than anything that could happen to her in the house. The only thing that she is truly scared of, is going back to her old life. Such character seems very believable to me, possibly because I'm a bit like that myself. To be fair, Eleanor was not at all old, but I guess in these conservative times, she was well above the marriage age.

No, she wasn't above marriage age at that time.

She was just so repressed, it made her seem older. At the time of the film, Harris was only about 8 to 9 years older that Russ Tamblyn.

I think the movie dropped the ball in that it didn't originally feature the love triangle from the book (Eleanor, Luke and Theodora). This failed attempt at romance was a large factor in pushing Eleanor over the edge.
