Question about all the mirrors

Why so many mirrors? Sorry if there's been a thread about it already, but I'm really curious as to the meaning/purpose of all the mirrors? Seems like every room has at least 1 or 2 and they're featured very prominently in the shots, sometimes taking up 1/4 of the frame.

Don't know for a fact about this movie but my grandma was born in 1918 and she said that people had lots of mirrors in the days of gas lamps and candles and paraffin lamps and so on to catch the light and bounce the light around the room. It also brightened up the gloomy wooden walls in the daytime

I believe that's exactly right, as well as mirrors have always played a big part in many films over the years- directors and cinematographers love them for the many ways they can be used and seen while shooting a picture.

That is cool information.

My great-grandmother had a touch of the grand guignol and she didn't tell me about decorating tips from the Victorian era. Instead she told me about work horses dying in the streets and just being left to rot because they were far too large to move.

Now that is something you don't see in the movies.
