The Score

It is absolutely stunning. I NEED it. Like right now. Is it available anywhere? Seriously, I can't let this one slide.

I agree! I think that every time I've seen it.

Now that I'm on "the Web", perhaps I should look for it. It definitely would be a great addition to my soundtrack collection, which used to grow quickly when soundtracks were consigned to bargain bins. That was before John Williams' "Star Wars" and "Jaws" drew people's attention to film scores. *sigh*

EDIT: Here's one place:

Oh my gosh! Thank you so much!!! This was my first time seeing the film, and the music just blew me away. So goooood!

Amazon AND ebay have copies of the soundtrack, packaged with "The Premature Burial" score. I have to wait till late this month unfortunately, but I plan to "splurge" and get a copy. I'm hoping the other soundtrack will be a treat, too. It's been so long since I've seen the film that I don't have a memory of it.

I used to buy soundtracks frequently till John Williams made them so in demand that they rarely reduce prices on them. Before that, I don't think people paid attention to most film scores. They certainly aren't 50 cents or a couple of dollars anymore, not since JW struck. However, pre-"Jaws" John Williams wasn't as admirable, something many don't realize. When he started emulating his idols, he became today's success. *grin*

I don't think I've even seen The Premature Burial. I'm sure it's great. ;)

I buy a lot of soundtracks. You can find a lot of gems at thrift stores, and Barnes and Noble carries a fantastic variety, with GREAT sales.

What's funny is that I have very little to no JW in my collection. I have TONS of Elfman, and lots of others. No JW though. XD

Sadly, we have only one music store at the mall, but I can't go to as I have limited mobility. The only source otherwise is Wal-Mart. The nearest music stores are 35 and 45 miles away unless I'd drive an hour to Terre Haute, Indiana.

Up until the Seventies, it seemed there were so many record/music stores; then, they must have gone out of business. So, it's been many years since I've purchased soundtracks.

For some reason, I never thought of the Net until just recently and might look into what's affordable.

Most of my soundtracks are on vinyl, including works by Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Miklos Rozsa, John Addison, Henry Mancini, Ernest Gold, Basil Poledouris (whose "Conan the Barbarian" score is, to me and many others, one of THE soundtracks of all time), Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Nino Rota (I have all three of the "Romeo and Juliet" albums, including the multi-record set of the ENTIRE sound- and voicetrack!), Maurice Jarre, and Vangelis. I'm probably leaving out some goodies. There are some contemporary composers whose scores I'd love to have. I am particularly taken by "POTC: On Strange Tides".

I love Elfman's work, too! Sadly, due to being on disability, I have been restricted about what I can add. Also, there's the matter of going to stores. It's been so long since I've been to a place that used to be my favorite: Headstone Friends in Terre Haute. Someday maybe again...

Sorry your mobility is so limited! That would drive me crazy!

Have you tried any fileshare programs?

reply

It DOES! I feel like my world has been whittled down so much that there's scarcely anything left, especially when I can't use my hands and arms, which happens too often. I try to be patient till the flareup subsides, encouraging myself that it will.

I'm always afraid of anything that involves files and downloading or uploading, whichever it is. I'm tech-challenged to a severe degree.

So, I'll wait to the end of the month to see if there's enough in my pension to allow me to buy the music. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll sell some things at ebay and/or Webstore=} Then, it feels a lot like trading~buying something without feeling guilty about it. *snicker*

Till then, I can listen as I watch the movie on YouTube, having been silly enough not to have taped it that night because I was saving room on a tape for "The Masque of the Red Death".

Aww, I'm so sorry. Seriously, wish I could help. :/

Hehe, I'm pretty paranoid with fileshare and the Internet, but I really like SoulSeek. It's a great fileshare community, with little to no viruses. It's mostly people just looking for music.

Oh man, I wish we could still tape stuff on our TV!

reply

I love my VCR and don't intend to let go of it. I did consider the VCR/DVD player if I still could videotape. I like it especially because I can tape three or four movies on one tape.

I'll be ready the next time TCM airs "The Haunted Palace" and other goodies!

But, it would be nice to listen to the music separately, too.

The theme is up on youtube. the main title score is great! very eerie, I love the way its used in the film why paget is wandering around the halls of the mansion, atmosphere and beauty together, just amazing!

reply

The main thematic progression is VERY similar to the theme used in 'Dune' years later. I don't see how it could have been an accident.

reply

Ronald Stein later did scores for "LOST IN SPACE".
