So I grew up seeing the poster and stills of this movie for about 20 years and now I finally watched it and I thought the whole big point of the film is McQueen getting that iconic motorcycle and flying over the big fence and escaping I mean that's what's on the cover the fence and McQueen jumping vet it but all that happens is he crawls out and jumps over a ting fence in. S random field which he did not even need to jump wtf !

I sped typed this on my phone but basically I thought the big set piece of this movie is McQueen riding his motorcycle over the wall and escaping but he don't escape and just runs the motorcycle over a tiny fence in the middle of a random field

I'm sorry you felt you got duped. If you weren't from the MTV generation who needs an explosion every five minutes to be entertained you would realize this is a classic story born from a true story

It's not a tiny fence, it's multiple coils of barbed wire.
When he makes the jump he is under fire from a convoy of pursuing enemy soldiers.

And it's not in a random field, it's the international boarder with neutral Switzerland. If he had jumped the inner coils too, he would be free.

So he jumped the first (smaller) fence successfully, then wiped out into the bigger (final) fence when they shot at him. Why not just crawl through the wire to Switzerland and stick your tongue out at them?

reply

No. But thank you for this lovely example of a run-on sentence. I'm sure English teachers the world over use this to show their kids what not to do.

No, today they teach descriptivism. As long as you got what he was trying to say, all is okay. There are no rules.
