The EYE

Attenborough's character was based on Roger Bushell who had a skiing accident before the war which left him with a drooping left eye and a scar. Nice touch to include this in the movie.

At an event in Canada, Bushell had an accident in which one of his skis narrowly missed his left eye, leaving him with a gash in the corner of it. Although he recovered from this accident, he still had a dark drooping in his left eye as a result of scarring from his stitches.[4]

Interesting. He had been held by the Gestapo before being taken to the Stalag, and I assumed the mark below the eye was the result of being beaten during an interrogation.
