If you're referring to that blaring/wailing trumpet music that popped up all too often, then you are not alone. I thought that music was comically out of place in what was supposed to be a suspenseful detective movie. That music seemed more befitting a romantic movie set in Mexico, or on an early-sixties version of The Love Boat, but certainly not in this movie!
As far as Mickey Spillane the author serving as Mickey Spillane the actor portraying his own creation (detective Mike Hammer), all I can say is, hmmm, interesting experiment. Not great, but not terribly bad, either. The whole movie seemed to have a goodly assortment of rough-hewn mugs, and he fit right in.
