Gritty + Tough

Very noirish !

The b\w is effective and fine acting from Spillane,himself.

Music fits and there are some particularly nasty scenes which may border on the gratuitous.

You got the veteran Lloyd Nolan and a stunning femme fatale,Shirley Eaton(Goldfinger,anyone ?).

Nothing glamorous here but the seamy\steamy side of the city and those who peddle influence and power.

...surprisingly,a very modern tale of crime emanating from 1963(includes Johnny Cool as well).

The anti-hero still thrives nicely today,thanks in large part to guys as Mickey Spillane....

I saw this a long time ago in the 60's and have it reserved on Netflix but the wait is a long time. I hope I get to see it. I have seen several Mike Hammers and I think the best was Stacy Keach in the 80's. He seemed to have the character focused well and I remember Mickey Spillaine approving the casting of Stacy Keach. I sure wish he had not gotten busted in England because it never came together after he was released. They tried to bring it back a couple of times but it never worked again. Too bad because people make mistakes and sometimes it is hard to recover. A lot of people liked Elliot Gould's version but it did nothing for me. Mike Hammer is definitely an iconic character. I remember Darren McGavin's character on TV but was too small to pay attention to it.

Keach was GREAT

too bad what happened in London..lost the momentum;

McGavin was pretty good as Hammer..I got the entire set !

Elliott Gould never played Mike Hammer. Perhaps you're thinking of Gould as Philip Marlowe in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973)?

All the universe or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

If he had lived, I could have seen Dennis Farina play Mike Hammer but we will never know. Another actor we lost too soon. Rest in Peace, Mr. Farina.
