Tangredi's position towards Garibaldi

At first he joins Garibaldi's army but at the ball scene from the end he says that the ones who fled to join Garibaldi will be shot and calls them traitors. I must admit I am a little confused? If someone can please clarify this for me. Maybe someone who has read the book.

Thank you

Thank you very much for your response. Now it all makes sense.I know very little of italian history. Great film!

Are you sure that was a change in Tancredi? He never seemed particularly idealistic to me. I think joining the revolution was also opportunistic on his part. He is a natural politician, choosing the side that will best suit his future plans, and is fittingly asked to run for office at the end of the movie.

There isn't really any character development in the movie at all. The future just becomes nearer for the young characters, and the end becomes nearer for the old ones.

I saw it more as a changing of the guard movie; with Tancredi represented the new generation that was replacing his uncle's generation. If they're representing an entire group too much character development wouldn't make much sense.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

I didn't read the book but I have to assume it's a lot more detailed than the movie; they usually are, even given the length of this movie.

I saw the movie more as a changing of the guard story; with Tancredi represented the new or next generation that was in the process of replacing his uncle's generation. If they're representing an entire group too much character development wouldn't make sense.
