I didn't read the book but I have to assume it's a lot more detailed than the movie; they usually are, even given the length of this movie.
I saw the movie more as a changing of the guard story; with Tancredi represented the new or next generation that was in the process of replacing his uncle's generation. If they're representing an entire group too much character development wouldn't make sense.
