Being retired Air Force(ASsigned to 22nd. Air Force, Travis AFB, CA) and a Flight Engineer on the C-5a and C-141/A-B aircraft, I ask the same question like everyone does; why doesn't MCA/Universal release this one on DVD. I kived through numerous ORI's and they are no different than my command; Military Airlift Command. Now it is Air Mobility Command. Anyone have a comment on this?

I have been wondering about "why no DVD?" for this film for almost 10 years. MGM seem to be notoriously slow in their decision to release DVDs of older films even when there is a demand.
shareWish there was something we could do, this one as well as PT-109 and Strategic Air Command still after all these years been re-released on DVD, WHY? I know there has to be a profitable market for these films.

shareThere is now an official Region 2 release from Germany - just got released a few weeks ago. The print is good... but unfortunately Full Screen - but hey... it's better than the VHS...
it's (of course) got a German Title "Der Kommandant"

shareI just bought a copy of this movie at the Frank and Son show in the City of Industry, California. It was recorded from a broadcast on Turner Classic Movies as evidenced by the TCM logo popping up from time to time. The quality is not the greatest but at least it is in widescreen. I love all three SAC movies made by Hollywood but I feel that this one captures the high stress of SAC the best.

I'm still surprised myself about the fact that it hasn't come out on DVD along with Strategic Air Command. I was born well after both these movies came out but I saw it several times growing up since my dad was a USAF veteran and he enjoyed movies like this. Unfortunaly, there are few movies that compare with the air to air camera work that was performed for them. The only one that comes to mind is Bombers B-52 which was made not too long after that aircraft entered USAF service.
