Great Film! No one has anything to say?

What do people think about this film? The acting by Lavi is very conving! (especially during the whipping scenes)

I'm glad to see someone else feels the same. I think this film is excellent. Daliah Lavi conveys incredible emotion through her body language, and her huge, vulnerable eyes. The ultra-slow pacing of the film combined with the dark, eerie visuals only reinforces the perverse, morbid atmosphere of it all.

It's one of my all-time personal favorites. I can't understand why it sits in the shadow of Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Kill Baby Kill, Bay of Blood and probably several other Bava titles. It's every bit as good as those movies; in many ways even better.

Agreed, this film deserves to be regarded as well as any of those. It's easily one of Bava's very best films.

Warning! The Monster is loose!

To be honest, I thought it was well made, but kind of boring, and the plot was not that great. Amazing visuals though.

I've seen most of Mario Bava's major films, and after finally seeing the uncut European version of THE WHIP AND THE BODY, I can't help but be impressed and agree with others here that it is one of his best. The score by Rustichelli is superb, as are Lavi and Lee; its always a coup to have superb character actors like Luciano Pigozzi and Harriet White Medin in a film. The cinematography is gorgeous, Bava has the eye of a painter in utilizing some of his stock Italian locations, and contributes his trademark lighting, production values, and convincing special effects. The suspense and brooding atmosphere prevail throughout; some of the imagery of this film captivates me the way that BLACK SUNDAY, PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES, KILL BABY KILL, LISA AND THE DEVIL, and BARON BLOOD do. Daliah Lavi is just gorgeous in this technicolor restoration, and I think the VCI dvd is a must have, what with the bonus soundtrack, its worth every dollar! Another menacing gothic masterpiece by the master! "Kurt is back!"

One of Bava's best,a stunning, beautiful, gothic masterpiece. You don't hear Christopher Lee's voice on the English soundtrack, which is a shame, btu other than that I can't realy fault it.

Of the 15 Bavas I have seen this far this is my second favorite! My favorite is Rabid Dogs.

Bava´s second best after Lisa and the Devil. I much prefer it to Black Sunday, Bay of Blood and other more highly praised Bava films.

The theater is like a faithful wife. The film is the great adventure, the costly, exacting mistress

I thought this film was excellent. Christopher Lee was splendidly nasty as the sadistic Kurt. The ravishing Daliah Lavi was likewise superb in her role. Great spooky atmosphere, stunning visuals, and lovely lush orchestral score, too.

I've only seen two Bava so far: this and The Mask of the Demon. They are both similar (in setting) but for the use of colour in The Whip and The Flesh. I prefer Mask of the Demon in terms of story and actors but Whip and the Flesh is sumptuous in colour and colour for different moods. Plus Christopher Lee was rather gorgeous in this.
