When did Tatiana change allegiances?

We know that at the beginning Tatiana's loyalty to Russia is unquestionable, so when does she switch allegiances? Is she literally deciding who to shoot in the hotel room, or is she just trying to aim properly? Is she shooting Klebb because she has switched sides or because she realizes SPECTRE/Klebb were playing the Russians for fools as well and she is still loyal to Russia?

I've always wondered this as well. She really does just sort of get dragged around by everybody in this film and their isn't too much time spent on her character and her own personal thoughts on the whole matter as the plot moves along. This is also one of the few novels I've never got around to reading so perhaps the book clarifies this a little bit better?
In the final scene I always thought she was just trying to aim because she'd already interfered and knocked the gun out of Klebb's hands in the first place to stop the "horrible woman" from shooting Bond. It's be a little bit strange to have done that and then still not really know where her allegiance lies by that stage of the struggle.

i'd guess it was the night she spent with Bond at the hotel being filmed by the spectre agents. Bond has that effect on women.

spoiler..

in the goldfinger book Pussy was a lesbian until she met Bond. So Bond can definitely change loyalties.

Yep, she was smitten...

I don't think she was 100% convicted to her task anyway, she was after all told to accept the mission of screwing a stranger or die on the spot. Getting a chance to shoot Klebb in the fanny was probably easy to accept.

My first time watching this movie since childhood, it's clear to see where the inspiration for Frau Farbifina in the Austin Powers' movies came from :D

I refuse to believe she was trying to decide who to shoot, if she really was torn between Klebb and Bond she never would have knocked the gun out of Klebb's hand. As for when she changed allegiance it's not really stated but I personally think it was at somepoint on the train.

Are we sure that her allegiance to Russia was unquestionable? I think she was just a random secretary, which generally doesnt involve many decisions that test your patriotism. its possible that she was just a personality that was going with the flow and was patriotic because she had no reason not to be.

I'm sure they vetted her rather intensely, you don't work with top secret decoding machines unless they 100 percent trust you. Having said that basically the reason she was chosen was because she was a slut, she had 3 lovers and Klebb knew she'd have no problem throwing and putting herself out for Bond.

Oh right, I forgot that she was already working around the Decoder, which was why she was picked to pretend to defect with it to England.

Still, vetting for these kinds of things is usually to check for stuff like:
-Contact or familiarity with foreigners
-Personal connections with outside countries or locations
-Felonies and criminal activity
-Periods of one's life with minimal records where criminal activity could have been occuring (unemployed w/ no record of what one was up to, etc...)
-Family members or friends with problems or situations that could be levered against one to make them betray their country
-Addictions or mental issues that could be used as leverage to make one betray their country.

She wouldn't have any reason to not pass those kinds of things. I still think that she was casually patriotic, but when she met Bond she decided that he wasnt so bad and England by extension.

reply

Kind of curious what happened to Tania after the film? I mean she betrayed her country and Bond obviously didn't hang on to her for too long.

She defected because she didn't fancy having to eat out that ugly rug-muncher Rosa Klebb. With Bond, there could be threesomes with Honey Ryder etc.

Until the final scene in Venice I don't think she ever decided she was legitimately going to betray her country but after she knocked the gun out of Klebb's hands she clearly was on Bond's side, she wasn't trying to decide who to shoot she was trying to aim properly.
