You can see the same in the much later Clash of the Titans - the scene early in that film where the sea monster attacks Argos and unleashes a flood of water, wreaking the walls and pillars, is just as corny - but it was obviously hard to do this with any strong degree of realism before the advent of CGI.

I disagree with you both. I thought they looked better than I was expecting, during the landslide while the foundation was lifted, but especially during the faceoff between the 2 muscular heroes.
CGI is getting better all the time, but frequently has lacked realism, e.g., Spider-Man swinging during the Tobey franchise. My friend put his finger on it about 5 years ago: "Things look like they don't have any weight."
