A dark comic masterpiece imho.
The only minor quibble I have is with the silly names like "Bat Guano", "Jack D Ripper", and "Merkin Muffley". They were reaching for some cheap laughs, and it was not necessary.
This movie is the greatest comedy ever made. A stunning achievement which shall remain unparalleled for a long time. The writing in this movie is insane! So many conventions in comedy (and in cinema) were turned on their head. The screenplay is unapologetically political and refuses to glorify or demonize anyone, and my god that ending! I was 100% sure that they the would stop the nuclear bomb from exploding and decimating the world. That's movie logic, DUH! I couldn't believe that Kubrick didn't go down the route. LOL. I sadly have a feeling that this film may be prophetic, as it is only a matter of time before a nuclear weapon falls into the wrong hands. Such is the nature of destiny. You can often predict it, but cannot stop it.
I do agree that this movie had some curiously crass elements including those supporting characters...One supporting performance that I DID like though was George C Scott. He was underrated in this film!
I agree 100%. It's certainly one of the greatest comedies ever made. And like you and everyone else I was also certain that they were going to stop the bomb from falling. But that's the genius of Stanley Kubrick, the greatest director ever imho.
Kubrick's talent exceeds even conventional notions of genius. To have the courage to think out of the box like he did, and then the unflinching tenacity to realize that idea on film... GOD only he could do it.
Say what MovieManCin (I now realize that your ID is quite similar to that of mine!) you seem so knowledgeable and astute with regards to cinema, and also enjoy discussing films. I always wanted to have some type of a "movie discussion group" on IMDb. This just consists of "members" choosing a film by consensus (that we have all watched, or if you've not watched the film, you DO watch it) and then one of us opening a thread on that movie's board and posting discussion questions that we all answer. It's just a means to get us talking about films that we love and exchange ideas. It would be ideal if we had a few more people do this with us. I have a feeling atomickitten would be interested, and possibly a few more. Ignore this post if you are not interested (I will not mind at all), but it will be nice if we could do it. :)

I could post a thread in General Discussion and gauge interest and get started from there. But I just don't like posting there now, given all the trolls. Although I have two dozen trolls on ignore, but I still don't feel secure over there as yet. We could wait for the mods to come on board and ban the trolls (whenever that happens), or alternately, I could open a thread in Film Discussion (not many people there at the moment) and we could start with as many people as we get. Which would you prefer? Let me know.

I don't think doing a general post is a good idea at this time, because of trolls.
I think a better approach is the one you took by contacting me, recruiting one by one on individual boards which have no trolls. That way you're contacting people with similar interests who you have already conversed with.
You mentioned atomickitten, and I know a very intelligent poster from the Legion board: dreamersxdisease. You could recruit kitten, and I could ask dreamers. Then we could go from there.
I think that's the way to go. What do you think?

Of the ones I have contacted, I have so far heard from three. Allaby and MissMargoChanning said that they were interested and Sentient Meat said that s/he will give it a shot. I've yet to hear from Cookie so far. Also, Kazak noticed my post to Allaby and expressed interest in joining, to which I agreed. I'm yet to track down Atomickitten so I guess that will not happen now.
Also, when you mentioned "home base", did you mean our home base or the home of the group? If you are referring to the home base of the group, I'm just a little reluctant, because this movie board will be in trending quite often and this might attract the attention of trolls. I was thinking of a less visited board on the main page like "Film History and Meaning","Film Classics" or "Film Festivals" or even a scarcely visited page down the list like "Art" or "Contributor's Help". The farther away we are from the gaze of trolls, the better it is for us. But still, if you feel this place is better for the group, I'm all up for it. Honestly, I'm OK with whatever forum you choose.

I just messaged samoanjoes and godewey. Feel free to message any other posters you want. I suggest we wait for another day or two, and then get started. I guess it is better to post in the "Art" board which is waaay down the forum list which could not possibly catch the eyes of the trolls. What do you think?
I guess the first thread could be a thread where we seek feedback from the members about the group should be about. i.e. How do we go about choosing movies, what the format and nature of discussion should be like etc., What are your thoughts?
Okay your timing and ideas for the first thread sound good. We could also solicit ideas for the name of the group. Have you given any thoughts to that?
Wow! I just scrolled down the list of boards. It's huge! I had no idea there were so many boards. Art (436) could work, but if you want a really quiet, secluded neighborhood, we could use Video (21).
