Borrowed from PSYCHO?

Does anybody think that the role Louise plays in this movie owes a bit to the role the Janet Leigh character played in PSYCHO? In both cases, we have a female character who is central to the plot and behaving badly getting killed while half the picture still has yet to happen. In both cases we lose a character who we expected to play a cetral role all through the movie, and in both cases it was a woman acting outside the law.

i thought the basic plot structure is the same, but Louise is more badass than Marion Crane.

I think the whole film borrows from Psycho, as it was kind of a rip-off. Having said that however, I love dementia-13 and even though it may have started with the intention of chashing in on the success of Psycho, I feel it has a definate charm and style all its own.

Absolutely agree 100%. I had the exact same thought while watching the movie and I'm not the type to watch critically for those types of things.

As soon as Louise got the hatchet job, I thought "Hey... beautiful, greedy, blonde ditches her man, shows us her undies, appears to be the main character in the story, and then dies a brutal death halfway through the film... I remember this movie, it was called Psycho the first time I saw it!"

I'm not totally trashing the film, but I think it definitely borrows too much from Psycho.

Also the fact that the killer takes two victims - one who is a vital part of the story and the other who is not. And then we have the Lila and Sam type characters in Kane and Richard, only here Richard is a suspect for the killings. We then have the psychiatrist who explains the killer's motives.

Coppola admits himself that it is like Psycho and that that was partly the reason Roger Corman was interested in it.

He says specifically, "Roger, you know, I have a script that could be made. It's kind of like Psycho.' He always wanted a film that was like some hit film. Hitchcock's Psycho was a big deal at the time. I said, 'I have this script...' and he said, 'Show me some of it."

It was part of an interview and the rest of the details are found here:

Yeah, it was still shocking though and I loved the film. 9.5/10. Damn Coppola's a great filmmaker!

I don't think so at all. What's this movie PSYCHO you're talking about?

I like this movie and I tend to like Corman films. As a previous poster stated, I think it was intended to cash in on the success of "Psycho". Which is just how Corman rolled.

So many films borrowed from PSYCHO after that blockbuster hit theaters.

Strait-Jacket? Homicidal, anyone?

Like they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Or rather, they just ripped it off.

But I like those films, too ;)

I don't mind rip-offs as long as they're worth watching and I thought Dementia 13 was pretty cool.

Agreed. I don't mind rip-offs as long as I'm entertained by them.

One very entertaining one that skirts parts of "Psycho" is "Homicidal" (1961). It's definitely worth catching! Many of the movies that sort of borrowed from "Psycho" and, not so much, "Peeping Tom" (also released in 1960) really stand on their own, not merely rehashing the story.

Then, there's the "Psycho" homage of Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill". Somehow, I really like the low-budget ones far better.

I'm soooo happy that THIS is showing "Dementia 13", as I haven't seen it for many years. Unfortunately, the weird glitch keeps showing up in which the bottom part of the screen resembles a videotape that needs to have its tracking adjusted. I wish they could beat that problem.

The death scene is also a ripoff of Psycho, but done very badly.

Right, she wasn't half as hacked up as she should of been having seen how many times the axe came down on her....

You meant "should've" or "should have." There is no such thing as "should of."
Please take note of that and put it near your computer monitor. Also, tell everyone you know. Thanks!

I wondered why she didn't swim back out to the middle of the pond rather than hang onto the edge and continue to be axed. I'd have been backstroking the second I saw a man with a raised ax on the shore.

I always think that it's a shame that both Janet Leigh in 'Psycho' and Luana Anders in 'Dementia 13' are killed off too early. There is a difference that Janet Leigh has a change of heart in 'Psycho.' And she is about to return the money before she is killed. But I doubt if Luana Anders would have had a similar change of heart about her crime in this. She is full of greed whereas Janet Leigh was trying to help her boyfriend.

I always wonder if Hitchcock repaid the compliment by later stealing a bit of the Louise character in 'Family Plot.' Blanche in 'Family Plot' is a fake medium. Watching her always reminds me of Louise hoodwinking Lady Haloran in 'Dementia 13' with a similar type of fake mediumship. Louise's sly smile as she watches Lady Haloran is similar to Blanche opening her eyes slyly to watch Miss Rainbird, both watching what effect their trickery is having on their prospective prey.

I doubt Hitchcock saw this.
