Why only 6? For me it's one of the rare 10 stars movies.

I think 6 is about right. It was overly long and became ponderous at some points. I also got tired of her continuing to put up with him. He had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and her loyalty seemed unrealistic. She had her own job and could have left him a while ago. None of the main characters was a very sympathetic one. I also thought the direction could have been better.

I wish it would be longer. I find it very atmospheric...love such movies. Especially the ones filmed in Paris in the 60's.

Women way back then put up with their husbands, divorce rates were VERY low. Almost no woman filed for divorce (only some rich or famous women did).
Sure she was working as a cosmetologist at Guy Laroche (?)making her own money, but that didn't pay much way back then nor does it pay much today. I bet her husband's income paid for the rent.
The Loren character most likely would have been forced to move to Neuilly or some other Parisian suburb area and the commute would have been insane. So she would have been forced to find a new job and new friends.
Don't forget, she was from a small town in Italy and rather shy. It would have been hard on her to make new friends (and going through a depression caused by a divorce and living alone) and maybe that's what made her hesitate and try to stick it out with Perkins?
Just a thought.
