WHAT FOOD PRODUCT WHERE 'HI HO'S'

In one scene Glen Ford comes into the kitchen with a grocrey bag with eggs and a box labeled "HI HO",does anyone no what this food product was? I enjoy watching for food products in films from the early 60's when I was a child and seeing if they still are around or if the container has changed,am I the only person that does this?

reply

Sadly, I'm old enough that I remember them. (I watched the movie yesterday for the millionth time so I'm on the boards looking at messages.)

Hi Hos were crackers. They were the Sunshine brand version of Nabisco's Ritz.

reply

Actually, they were chocolate creme sandwich cookies.
A sort of poor man's Oreo.

You're thinking of Hydrox cookies, which actually pre-dated Oreos by four years - not at all a "poor man's Oreo." Hydrox cookies were actually kosher, whereas Oreos were not - even though Hydrox cookies aren't being marketed to consumers, apparently, Carvel still uses them as the cookie-crumb base to some of their ice cream cakes (because they are kosher - whether dairy kosher or parve, I'm not sure).

Hi Ho crackers were produced by the same company, Sunshine, as Hydrox cookies Ho Ho cakes, which are also often confused with Hi Ho crackers, are like Yodels, and were produced most recently by Hostess.

Just because hydrox came 4 years before oreo doesn't mean it can't be a poor man's oreo. Hydrox has less name recognition and tastes like garbage and is therefore a poor man's oreo. If you want a good cream-filled cookie, you can't be kosher (although apparently you could eat a giraffe to fill the void).

I remember seeing Hydrox cookies in ice cream shops up until just a few years ago. I guess Oreo had to get contracts with them too.

I somewhat remember them. I remember people referring to "Hi Ho crackers" when I was a child in the 70s-80s.

They were crackers, similar to Ritz Crackers, from the Sunshine company. Hydrox cookies, similar to Oreos, were also by the Sunshine company. I think they were around until the 1990s and I still miss Hydrox cookies.

@oypoodle: apparently, Kellogg's trot them out every so often - the last time they did so nationally was 2008. Although not available to consumers, apparently, Carvel still uses Hydrox cookies in their cakes because they're kosher. Thought you might be interested in this info

UPDATE: Amazon.com still carries the 100th anniversary Hydrox cookies on their website, even though they're no longer available. You can, however, sign up to be notified if it ever goes on sale again http://www.amazon.com/Hydrox-Chocolate-Sandwich-14-Ounce-Packages/dp/B 001J8LHGI

That would fun, wouldn't it?
