Cleopatra frame question

In the coronation scene, the medium close up, one of the only ones in a movie filmed almost entirely on long shot, there is no detail, it is very blurry. Is there an explanation for this or this is just Joseph L. Mankiewicz's trademark shoddiness?

Your endlessly repeated phrase "Joseph L. Mankiewicz's trademark shoddiness" will end up engraved on your tombstone if you don't calm down.
