Garland-Lancaster

Two great performances..but,I kept thinking how Lancaster had 9yrs on her age wise, but she looked about 20yrs older than him.
The toll Hollywood took on its young stars then and now-it is a lucky few who have transitioned into a somewhat normal adult life.
Garland gave a great performance-not the typical Garland role.

I think the two did good work with the material that they were given. However this film is just so dated. Lancaster's character is so patronizing and Garland's character is not really fleshed out very much. She has no credentials to work with the disabled yet she's hired anyhow. Then she disobeys her boss and calls the mother - lies to her in fact. Garland's compassion and sincerety come through. The film is a time capsule of society grappling with how to handle children with varying degrees of intellectual challenges. One thing was clear to me: all children respond to love.

I think this principle is not a dated one and would still apply today.

In any case, a very well made touching movie handling a very sensitive issue.

I have seen this movies countless times and never tire of it.
