Joan did the subject of mental illness infinitely better seven years earlier in Autumn Leaves - a greatly under-rated film. In that film she marries a much younger Cliff Robertson whose terrifying disintegration Joan handles magnificently. Here she has a 2 dimensional part that doesn't ask of her what she could still give.
