Anybody like this?

It has been a long time since ai have watched this film, but I recall it being a much more light hearted version of Sinbad than the Harryhausen efforts were. I reacll many gags with the old wizard, and an enjoyable villian in the character of El Kerim, who apparently keeps his heart locked away in an impenatrable tower. It was a rather small budgeted effort, but made quite enjoyable by the presence of Guy Williams in the lead role as Sinbad. Guy never fails to capture the screen in the roles he was given, always amazing us with his sabering abilities! I wouldn't mind revisiting this film and getting reacquainted with it. Anybody enjoy this film?

I haven't seen Equinox, what is it? Like you, I recall segment of this film, but not very coherently. I remember the wizard fairly well, he was comic relief. He made his arm grow really long in one scene, going down the hall and where ever else you can think of, to the evil villian in an attempt to steal his amulet. Of course, the villian caught him and burned his hand, making for a hilariously panicked retread in fast motion! I remember Guy Williams leading his men into the treacherous jungle for some reason. There was a captive princess too, of course. I also recall the evil wizard falling to his death at the end and shattering into pieces. I would love to see ity again. I know it isn't an effects extravaganza like the great Harryhausen films, but I like Guy Williams! Thanks for replying!

It was El Kerim, the evil villian who burned his arm, that much I do recall. El Kerim was in control of the castle and held the princess captive, while forcing the old wizard to begrudgingly work for him. The wizard was always trying funny stunts to steal some amulet or something from him so that he wouldn't retain his strange power over everyone, hence the arm stretching scene. It is funny, I cannot recall enough to make sense of it all exactly! Equinox sounds fascinating!

Sindbad and his crew had to climb this giant rope to get to the top of the tower where the villain's heart was kept. This movie totally captivated me when I first saw it as an 8 year old. I saw it recently and was a little disappointed by the effects but I guess that's natural. Still not bad. Would make a good re-make. "Peter Jackson's Captain Sindbad" ???

"Sinbad and his crew had to climb this giant rope to get to the top of the tower where the villain's heart was kept" ... I remember that quite well now that you post it! El Kerim was rather cool due to the fact that he was separate from his heart. A remake...I don't know. I think I prefer the originals to remakes these days. I don't know as the one and only man capable of making a remake (Jackson) would be interested in something like Captain Sinbad.

I enjoyed Captain Sindbad when I was a kid, but I did not remember the title. I was very happy a few years ago when a knowledgable friend told me the title, and I could then start looking it up. As a kid, I loved the sequence where Sindbad and his men are trekking through a dangerous swamp to get to the tower with the villain's heart, and the natural perils are picking them off one by one! (I was inspired to draw my own versions of that deadly trek.) I also loved the whole idea of a villain whose heart is kept in a box! That's a fun fantasy film.

I'm glad to see there are other fans. The last time I checked this board, there were no messages!

Equinox is fun, too. Watch that and then watch the first Evil Dead movie. I don't know if Sam Raimi has ever admitted it in print, but I'm pretty sure Equinox inspired the story for Evil Dead. The plot similarities are striking.

"I'm glad to see there are other fans. The last time I checked this board, there were no messages!" ... Yes, I am glad that my thread is slowly growing. Whne I first came here, there was nothing as well. It is good to reflect on this old but fun little adventure with other fans, though few we seem to be! I do wish this would surface on DVD. I still have those vague memories about the trek through the swamp/forest too! I still need to track down this Equinox film.

I watched this movie again the other day. I was wrong. Only Sindbad climbs the giant rope ( which is attached to a giant gong no less ). Does anybody know why this movie is never shown ? It's really not bad at all. I'm glad I saw it when I was young. Some of the images stayed with me all these years and Guy Williams is by far the best Sindbad I've seen so far.

Yes, the imagery stays with me as well, though the plotting is what is so fuzzy. Everything we recall seems to be correct, even if it isn't quite right, LOL! Thanks for clarifying about the giant rope and gong! Really, I have no clue as to why the film has completely disappeared. I recall seeing it on television on numerous occasions as a child.

reply

Yes, I really like this film, I watched it many times as a kid, and saw it again last year, And was very happy that I enjoyed it just as much if not more, think I was it on cable, Guy Williams was great in this, and the villian,

I am so jealous of you!!!!! I would love to see this again, so count yourself lucky sonnythefat. I have a feeling that I would get more enjoyment out of it if I could see it again now. I was dismissive of many gems like this as a child, yet the memories of Captain Sinbad have never gone away. Yes, Guy Williams was a great actor!

Saw the final parts of it on TCM the other day. It looks great, really captures the spirit of a fantastic fairytale - of course some of the effects come out dated and the idea that this evil Prince would keep his heart openly like that (no human guards nearby?) is a bit iffy, but the Hydra monster on the cliff is really scary and the whole ambience is right.

Guy williams climbs the awesome high pillar, that was magic to me...
anyone remember the magic formula the wizard intoned?

reply

That pillar stands out in everyone's mind...even if we did originally remember it as a giant rope, LOL! Was the magic formula you refer to the one the silly wizard used to grow his arm long?? I always loved that scene, but I am not sure if that is what you are talking about or not. It is kind of fun trying so hard to remember this film and getting to discuss it with others. I hate that it isn't available to us, but perhaps one day...

I remember clearly that his head revolved 360 degrees, possibly as his punishment at the end??
saw a GREAT film by this director recently, "The Boss" with John Payne-neglected classic
I remember seeing this on the Walt Disney show with the animated titles-not the Wonderful World of Disney but a late 60's variant, remember that? had a funny professor as one of the characters...have not been able to pin it down on here

I have this movie on vhs tape. The "pillar" that Sinbad climbs in that tower is actually a huge rope attached at its top to a clapper that strikes an enormous gong to warn of anyone getting to close to El Kerim's heart. As Sinbad climbs the rope, the clapper strikes the gong, sending out a thunderous sound. Back at the palace, El Kerim grabs his chest as if having a heart attack asking what that sound was that no one else in the room seems to hear. He then realizes that Sinbad is in the tower, closing in on his heart.

So, it is a rope after all!!! Thank you for clearing that up, waltrips. I guess our memories were a bit better than we thought!

I haven't seen it since 1965, but I remember it fondly from the summer I was ten. I only have a few vivid snapshots of memory: the slave market at the beginning, with the slimy slave dealer who has the girl wrapped up in the blanket. Then Sinbad being brought before the queen and whipped as he kneels before her. A giant alligator eating one of the crewmen and leaving a spot of blood floating on the pond (scared me silly when I was a kid). The wizard with his heart hidden in a distant tower on the horizon. That's about it. I think I'll have to look for a copy.

I loved it. Back then we didn't know the special effects were cheesy. The characters and situations were most interesting. The magician making his hand stretch, the guy getting sucked down that hole, climbing up that huge rope and borrowing the guys hook to do it, the fist in the tower, somebody getting stabbed in the heart with a sword and not dying. I'd really like to see this one again.

I love this film and wish I had it on tape.
It was on one Christmas morning, way back in the late 60s early 70s in the UK and it has such happy memories for me. Wow, it would have been quite a new film then!
I loved that huge fist that he battles in the Wizard's tower!

One day I shall see it again.

I grew up in the seventies and was a Star Wars kid, so I had been sort of spoiled on special effects. I recall being very critical of this film and hating some of the effects and such back when I first saw it...yet for some reason I retained fond memories of a fun adventure. Weird, isn't it? For all my criticism when I was young, I never forgot it and look back fondly on it!

Yeah, I love this movie, if you like this movie I suggest "Bridge of Birds", a fantasy book by Barry Hughart (I think that's his name?), it's a little more profane but I love it... I always liked Guy Williams, he had such a wholesome screen presence...

I loved it. I *still* love it. I was six when it came out. That was a better time. I'm sorry I don't have a good copy of it. Maybe someday I will.
