shareI presume it's because if a kid dies in a film, fewer parents will take the whole family to see it.

In the film Sabotage, Hitchcock had one of the characters, a young boy, (along with a dog) killed by a bomb. The movie was not very successful, and Hitchcock stated in an interview that he felt that that particular scene played a major factor in the film's failure, so it's not something he ever wanted to do again.
