sharei agree, although Billy is ultimately the more tragic character. i think the movie is probably one of the earliest examples of teenage indecision.

I also thought a great deal about "Ferris Beuller's Day Off" and "The Graduate." Same kind of protagonist.

I just re-watched it for the first time since the 80's and thought the same thing. The Fisher name and the same general story theme where enough to convince me that Wes Anderson was influenced by Billy Liar when conceiving Rushmore.
