Interview with Shelley Winters

I remember seeing an interview with Shelley Winters where they asked her what this film meant. She replied with a laugh that she had no idea.

The play is soooo much better, the film just doesnt come close and looses so much of the essence of the original play...but a bad production of the play could be terrible....

Its a long time since I read it (7yrs ago)and I watched the movie shortly afterward and basically the film is about half of the play....its all based on exestential beliefs... but the sense I got from the play is that people can adopt power and influece mearly by appearence...ie puting on a costume...but that the whole world is mearly a pretence as in the play the civil war ends up not being real either and all the characters even the ones that die come back and hang up their costumes and leave the brothel....Life is one big game where sex and power are key and all is not that real....this is going on memory I'd really need to read the play again and watch the film... I also HATED the film except Shelly Winters... its nothing like the play which is a masterpiece!!!!

No prob. I recon its the screenwriter that may be at fault...though the play script is so dense it would be difficult to put it into 90 mins

to further confuse all involved, including the audience, the play was a translation of Genet's original AND the movie is an adaptation of the play. so the movie, in essence, is a translation of a translation. something is bound to get LOST IN TRANSLATION. get how i made the link there? lol
