What did Stavros take with him and then leave at the docks?

When Stavros is talking to Thomna for the last time, there is an item in the room which Stavros says he is taking with him to America. As he holds it, he explains, "With this, I can always eat." After arriving in America, however, we see that he has left the item at the dock.

What is this item? It clearly has some significance, but I don't remember seeing it prior to that scene with Stavros and Thomna. It looked kind of like a worn-out saddle or something with an old rug thrown over it. Anybody know what it is?

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

It looked like a rug, but I'm not sure. Didn't get that bit either.

I'm wondering about this as well. My guess is that it was the porter pack he used to carry the loads when working at the port in Constantinople.

I, too, initially thought it was a rug, but I think the rug was stolen from him earlier in the film. I think the poster who believed it to be the thing he wore on his back when carrying heavy loads is most likely correct.
