While I am against any killing, I don't think there is anything Stavros could have done. Now, I can't understand the idea of giving a young man a treasure, while he had to travel on foot on no man's land. It is a miracle he reached Constantinople alive. In fact it was his sweet persona that helped him survive. I doubt he could fend off Osman's fake friendship. Osman was despicable, a sort of an outlaw thief, difficult to understand why he robbed Stavros as long as he mostly disposed the stolen property.
At that time it was a matter of who is more powerful or intelligent. But intelligence alone can't win a battle, it only helps. And law was favouring part of the people, the Ottoman Turks. Greeks and Armenians were second grade citizens.
