Its a pity they're not showing it letterboxed.

Anyone know why TCM could not get a letterboxed print of this film? Was this film ever released on video or DVD? If not, what is the hold up?

reply

Scarcely any need for letterboxing. It was only made in 1:66.

I only managed to catch about an hour of it. I liked it, but Hamilton was meek..., lacking in performance.

Now, I do have a question for anyone that watched it. Did anyone noticed the hotel desk clerk at Warren Stones' hotel? Was that not Roger C. Carmel? He isn't listed online anywhere as being in it. I'd like to see this again, too. Interestingly, I did find a NY Times review about the movie in 1963--http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9E01E7DE1531E73BBC4F51DFB46 78388679EDE

I was watching it, too, and I'm pretty sure it was not Roger C. Carmel. He had a pretty distinctive voice and I did not hear it. I am sure I would have recognized him. After all, the movie is only 4-5 years before his appearances on "Star Trek" and his regular role on "The Mothers-In-Law." I don't think he gained all that wait in that short a time. I also bet he had that handlebar mustache for a long time and the clerk did not.

I agree that Hamilton's performance is weak. I've certainly seem him better.

Sam Tomaino

I'll admit he was very low-key, and it took me an hour or two to figure that it was him. I saw it in his attitude. What threw me off initially, was that I thought it was David Tomlinson--he had that same demeanor.

You are mistaken .That is definitely Roger C Carmel playing the desk clerk. He really doesn't look that much different without a mustache. He did not have his mustache in the early years as I've seen 2 other films where he didn't have it. You can't go by weight gain.Depending on what you eat the pounds can add on very quickly! It's losing it that's hard. Plus the film could have been filmed as long as a year before it was released in theaters. That's still true today.

I checked the film's credits here at IMDB for this film & at Carmel's board.IMDB one of the few sights that will have a list of the uncredited actors & actresses in films.

Roger C. Carmel ... Hotel Clerk (uncredited)

I'm pretty sure it WAS an unbilled Roger C. Carmel (saw part of it today and thought the same thing), Director Jim, who was basically an unknown actor when this movie was made. The low-key performance as Eli Wallach's desk clerk wasn't ordirarily among the type of roles he'd later be famous for.

reply

Yeah, I'm fairly certain now. At first I thought he could have been David Tomlinson, but with his second appearance on the 'second day', I could see Carmel, slightly thinner and more subdued.
