Not yet a Fellini fan, seen 8 1/2 and Amarcord; what to see next to

Change my mind about him? So far my impression is that Fellini is style over substance, and doesn't really care much for having a strong narrative thrust to propel viewers through a concrete story. All of these things would be fine, and have been done well before, but I failed to care about anything that was happening in these films.

Should I give Fellini another chance, or is this just how his films are?

For reference, I watch art-films more than I watch blockbusters, so don't throw me any 'go back to Michael Bay' comments. ;)

Maybe you should try The Nights of Cabiria.

That was one I was considering. I love the visual style of Fellini, but I want to have empathy for characters on the screen at the same time. So if this film accomplishes both goals, I should really enjoy it.

reply

I'd say it does. I hope you'll enjoy it!

As far as the masters go, Fellini is fairly hit and miss for me. I'd say check out La Strada and La Dolce Vita and if those still don't do it, you can move on.

reply

Definitely check out La Dolce Vita.
