Charlie.

Did Smiley Burnett who played Charlie pass away during the run of this series as well? I know Bea Benederet died, but in one of the scenes with Floyd yelling "All Aboard!", Mrs. Bradley asks him why he still does that, and he indicated that he does that in honor of Charlie's memory. I never noticed he wasn't on the series at that time until that scene.

Yes, If you look up Burnett's BIO, you will see that he died a year BEFORE Bea (Mrs Bradley) at the young age of 55. Floyd did not do much better.. he died AFTER the series ended, but at 66.

I'll have to look up at 'Floyd's bio.

So sad that they both died at such early ages.

I wonder if Smiley Burnett (Charlie) knew he was terminally ill? He appeared to have worked up until the very last, and still seemed(?) healthy.

I just watched the episode a few days ago as I tape the show on my DVR since they are so slow releasing the rest of the show on DVD. I hadn't seen this episode since my childhood and probably didn't pay attention to the particular scene where Floyd hollered "All Aboard!" I thought it was so beautifully done, especially when Kate puts her hand on Floyd's shoulder. It was so tender and a classy farewell To Charlie and his portrayer, Smiley Burnett.
