Why not just hire identical twins?

I have noticed that in every case except the show "Sister,Sister" where they require an identical, they have one actress playing both parts. Patty Duke of course, Hayley Mills, and Lindsay Lohan come to mind. Why not just hire a pair of identical twins. Are they that hard to find? Also have there been boys cast as identical twins? I have only seen girls.

They were making a show for Patty Duke specifically. She had just won an Oscar and was a great actress. Creating a show specifically for Patty Duke was a big thing at the time.

If they were just looking for an actress to fit the premise then they probably would have hired twins and called the show something like "Identical Cousins".

The same with Hayley Mills. Disney had her under contract and they built the premise of the movie around her playing two roles.

The irony here is that they usually hire identical twin kids to play one character to conform with the Coogan law, like the Olsen twins. And sometimes, they manage to parley their twin-dom into a successful franchise, like the Olsen twins.

Cuneo,
I just saw your post. Your irony is hilarious. How true. Hollywood's own 'New Math'.

You cannot have 'The Patty Duke Show' without Patty Duke!!!

Not sure whether they were identical, in reality or in their roles, but there were the the Schultz twins, Keith and Kevin, in The Monroes. Also, there was the "dual role" casting of Richard Dimitri, as "Bertram and Renaldo", in When Things Were Rotten -- and Armie Hammer playing both Winklevoss twins in The Social Network!

Yes, there have been boys cast as identical twins. The Disney Channel show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody starred Cole and Dylan Sprouse.

Loretta Young also cast Dirk and Dack Rambo in The New Loretta Young Show back in the 1960s.

The Wilde Twins (Lee and Lyn) from the 1940s were identical and very talented.

They typically appeared as themselves in Musicals, but they starred in 'Twice Blessed', specially written for them. I saw it, and they were VERY good, very pretty and very charming and fun to watch.

'Twice Blessed' was very similar to 'The Parent Trap.' A good film.

Wait, you mean there weren't two different actresses?

Billy & Bobby Mauch starred in THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937) and three "Penrod & Sam" flicks.

Weren't the two of them in one of the Andy Hardy movies as well?

Parent Trap was probably a book and Mills was popular at the time. It was more than unlikely they would have been able to find a suitable and likable pair of twins back then to play Susan and Sharon.
For decades I thought they were actual twins in Parent Trap.

Patty Duke show was cashing in on the Parent Trap success. I for one find the Irish cousin to be unbelievably irrelevant to everything else on the show and could have just as easily been another actress.

Like Jeannie and Serena on Jeannie and Bewitched respectively, if the twin isn't impersonating the main character, what's the point of having her there?

Patty Duke show was simply to continue showcasing the dynamic actress, but an Irish look-alike cousin?

Bewitched was the amazing one tho, often using look-alikes to appear alongside Elizabeth Montgomery and relying on viewers to not notice when it is another woman, appearances by Serena are worth the watch just to see how it is done alone.

The Parent Trap was a reboot of Twice Blessed, and film from the 1940s that desperately needed rebooting-- it had good moments, but just didn't, pardon the expression, "sparkle," or something. It's the kind of movie that should be remade-- a good idea that wasn't fully realized in the original. Hayley Mills was hugely popular, and under contract at Disney. Also, if you remember the film, Susan and Sharon are not in that many scenes together.

The trick photography required to put one actress in two scenes is actually probably cheaper than paying two salaries, if the salaries are for star power, like a Hayley Mills or a Patty Duke.
