doesn't the landlady believe in knocking

Before entering Tim's (and Martin's) apartment... kind of odd that she just wanders in anytime she wanted to... I know they use it as a convenient comedy vehicle.. but as a tenant that kind of behavior would at least be somewhat bothersome...

I guess the character was written that way--nosy and intrusive. She sure kept them on their toes and brought all sorts of people in to complicate Tim and Martin's lives.

That's why they call it fiction.

It was typical of sitcoms of the times to have a wacky neighbor who would just show up. It continued into the 90's with Kramer in Seinfield, and I'm sure it's on some shows today.

He who fights and runs away, lives to run away again!

You could apply this to Ethel Mertz at times on I Love Lucy (but oddly enough, not Fred), and check out Jodie Foster in a creepy movie called The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane. There's a bit in there about a nosy landlady.

Likewise Barney Fife endured this on Andy Griffith, so the landlady felt she was obligated as the property owner and the rentor tolerated it must have had some validity to it.

Oddly enough, I'm watching this episode Portrait In Brown, and both Mrs. Brown first, THEN Brenner both seemed obliged to barge right in the Martin's apartment.

And yes, it all has pretty much just been part of the plot to carry into the story.
