Where would they have gone with this?

If The Lieutenant hadn't been cancelled in the spring of '64, would the show wind up sending him to Vietnam and would it have been a Vietnam version of Combat!. Or would he somehow have remained at Camp Pendxleton, training troops, so they could keep the show a mix of military and other themes?

Also, considering all the war movies that came out during World War II and even Korea, it seems strange that there wasn't a Vietnam version of Combat while the war was on. I guess it was too controversial a war, (although Korea, was, too). If you watch TV series of the late 60's and early 70's, it's kind of hard to tell that a war is going on.

The past is a series of presents. The present is living history we are privileged to witness

Given the narrow focus of the plotline, I think that may have been one of the reasons that led to the show's demise.

This was more geared to a movie production than a television show. I think when you produce a television show, the question to be asked is, do we have enough storyline content to support a five year run of the show? The obvious answer for "The Lieutenant" would be no.

Having just recently viewed a couple of episodes, this was Star Trek with a modern day (sixties vintage that is) U.S. Marine Corps setting. It tackled social issues like the follow on GR series did.
