Is this show any good?

As a long time Star Trek fan I was aware of this show only as one that Roddenberry had worked on previously, and one in which many ST actors had appeared. But I never knew much about it. I actually thought it was a cop show. I decided to look it up in Wikipedia and I'm intrigued by the premise; a contemporary US military show set in the Vietnam era, one that isn't Gomer Pyle. Is it worth checking out?

It was one of several shows of the time about an institution or profession of society with a young handsome hero and an older mentor. They were about how the institution/profession functioned and interacted with society. it was a time when we trusted our institutions and respected our professions more.

NAKED CITY City was about cops and at first James Franciscus and John McIntyre and then Paul Burke and Horace McMahon.

THE DEFENDERS was about lawyers had featured Robert Reed and E. G. Marshall

DR. KILDARE and BEN CASEY were about doctors. Richard Chamberlain and Raymond Massey and Vincent Edwards and San Jaffe.

MR NOVAK was about teachers. Jaems Franciscus again with Dean Jagger

THE LIEUTENANT about soldiers with Gary Lockwood and Robert Vaughn

All are excellent shows that hold up very well.

I saw "The Lieutenant" for the first time last night, and watched two episodes. It's intelligently written with a relaxed pace. It has thoughtful dialog and solid acting. No wonder it only lasted one season.

It's a gem. I like Star Trek, not a fanatic though, and I respect the work Gene Roddenberry, but I had literally never heard of this show ever. I started watching it by sheer accident and was stunned at how good it is. It is extremely realistic for it's time, or for any era, the writing is excellent and the acting superb. No wonder it only lasted one season. Some of the subject matter they've tackled in the episodes I've watched, you don't really see that from TV shows back in those days. It was absolutely ahead of it's time.

I see like Star Trek, they explored social issues.

I like Star Trek. They had hot women in miniskirts and futuristic bikinis.

I'm much older than you guys, and heard of it years ago. I saw an episode the other night, and was reasonably impressed.

It's like they killed Gomer Pyle and made a decent show using the same sets....must've buried him and Sgt Carter behind the Quonset huts.

The thing is, after The Lieutenant went off the air in 1964, Gomer went on!

How come we never heard of this Roddenbury gem before now.

It was a one season wonder, and most of those hardly get remembered.

But yeah, I thought this was a pretty portrayal of our beloved Corps. Gary Lockwood was pretty convincing. There were still a myriad of inaccuracies, but it was an overall likeable show IMO.

As a monster Star Trek fan myself, I can state that it is indeed a good, quality program. I have been watching it the past few months now (it originally aired slightly before I was born) and have been thoroughly entertained.

No blah, blah, blah!

Some episodes used the social themes that ST would later use.
