The Lieutenant is the series to actually protray what life in the Marines was really like before the days when Vietnam became a major issue.
No other show about the Marine Corps has come close to this finely acted and written series.

I joined the Marines decades after the show and I didn't see the show until April 2016 and I found it very accurate.
Roddenberry put out a gem. Too bad it was only one season.
I don't know how Vietnam would have been approached had the show survived late in the decade.
Gomer Pyle survived to 1969 but left the war alone as that would have shot down the show.
