One day I was walking home from school . . .

and noticed a crowd of people gathered. I was about 8 years old--this was about 1962.

I grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, but it was still unusual to see this kind of crowd gathered around something, watching, what was happening.

I walked over (this was on 4th Street between First and Second Avenue) and saw these large cameras. They were making a TV show!!! Wow! I walked up the steps of a nearby stoop to get a real good view of the scene. There I was, just a few feet from the actors! I could hear there dialogue.

All of a sudden one actor came shooting out of the first floor of the apartment building right in front of me. He grabbed the other actor and started saying "No more guns! Where ya goin'? My heads comin' off!" I remember the lines because they had to shoot it over and over and over again. Finally, it was getting late and I had to get home. Later, my mom, who had also stopped to watch them shooting told me who the actor was. I didn't know the name but years later I saw him again, and remembered, "Where' ya goin'? My heads comin' off!" I found out later that the show they were filming was "East Side, West Side."

It was the premiere of a new show called "Columbo."

I have always wanted tell that story to Peter Falk myself, but so far, no luck.

PS - I found a video of that episode about a year ago and there it was, Peter Falk running out of a building grabbing Neville Brand and shouting, "Where ya goin'? My heads comin off!" Amazing.
