La Notte, L' Elisse or L' Avventura? Which one is better?

So I purchased La Notte on amazon.com before I ever watched it. I saw that it was very well spoken about by critics on The Documentary film Z Channel (which I recommend to anyone, especially if you're into older films) so it interested me and I bought it.

It took me the second time I saw it to really appreciate it. It was slow moving and wasn't packed with excitement but It was a great film.

Im planning on buying more films by the director of La Notte so to get to the point. Which one of the three (La Notte, L' Elisse, L' Avventura)is better?

By the way, if there is a movie that he has done that is not on the three I pointed out let me know also. But if you seen the three I mentioned let me know which one you preferred.

Thanks

Blowup is one of his best. Avventura too... tho it's rather heavy for some people ;)

If you enjoyed La Notte, you should see all of these films. L'Avventura( a true landmark in the history of film), La Notte and L'Elisse are most effective viewed together as a trilogy. Blow Up is another film with a deep sense of place and time and is an extraordinary experience.

you should also check out The Passenger with Jack Nicholson...amazing film

In my opinion Antonioni's best is Blow up and it is one of my all time favourites. Though it's slow in the sense that there are not many turns in the plot or conflicts that manifest phisically it is very intense, it has a strong atmosphere that won't ever let you forget the film. And for me it is also crucial that David Hammings is just totally hot...

The other three pictures are also extraordinary. In fact if you get to see all three of them you may feel that you've been watching the same story or rather one big story in three parts that is due to Monica Vitti but first and foremost to Antonioni himself who really is the author of the films and you are guided through his universe while watching.

Well, if I have to make an order I'd prefer La notte the best since I feel that it is the most human in the sense that it lets its characters the closest to the viewer, you are able to understand their acts and feelings better, there isn't that much alienation in it.

I think L'Avventura and especially L'Eclisse are very much the exemplary films of the modernist attitude of the '60s. They really are intellectual in the sense that you have to work for finding out their sort of "message" though maybe it is not even necessary since they are both so impressing visually that it is a pleasure to watch them without too much contemplation (note that you're to watch Monica Vitti...).

Anyway I suggest not to hesitate watching an Antonioni film be it any of his works cause once you got their feeling you'll enjoy them all.

I enjoyed l'eclisse the most out of the three.

I think La Notte was the best of the three but L' Elisse is better than L' Avventura (IMO).

Are these 3 films meant to be watched in any particular sequence or it doesn't really matter?

reply

It does not matter at all.

my personal favorite is l'eclisse ..which is the most refined, most carefully made film antonioni has ever directed and is all the more powerful because of that .. but l'avventura is really where you should start. or with 'Il Grido which he made in the 50's before this trilogy... and which i think is the real start of the trilogy..

Since several critics includes 'Il desserto rosso' to his trilogy on "modern alienation", therefore making it a tetralogy (or 'quadrilogy'), then my fav film out of those 4, would be:
L'avventura

Followed by:
Il desserto rosso
La notte
L'eclisse

BTW I am with those who have mentioned 'Blowup' as their favorite movie directed by Antonioni. Blowup is also my favorite Antonioni.
