La donna e mobile

I had not seen either this movie or L'Avventura until recently, on the Sundance channel.(I think it's the sundance)

Anyway, Monica Vitti is quite impressive. I don't think we have an actress today who can run through so many emotions on her face in such a short time. It seems modern actresses just settle for one emote per shot, but actually, I think women are not like that at all(I am a woman, by the way).

Monica is the sun, in this eclipse. The guy is a temporary block to her.
Like L'Avventura, the men seem one dimensional.

I read on some other message that Ebert didn't like Antonini(sp?) because he dwells on certain shots ad absurdum or ad taedium. I think the director was trying to emphasize the static nature of the real world. And then contrast this with dynamic inner world of Monica's character. She really flows, or as they say, la donna e mobile.

Just a few quick thoughts for right now.

I agree with this post. She is quite interesting how she moves through different emotions and thoughts. You can see he thinking...just not sure what she is thinking and it is not the point anyway.

The movie itself is pointless. It is her acting that is the point.
