movies vs TV series

So I was wondering, if anyone here is familiar with the TV series at all, where it fits in to all the 26 movies. I mean, years for the show vs. movies make sense, since there was a gap between production for the show, but do they really work like this.
Because the movies stopped at 1974, when the show began, and then the show ran until 1979, then we have this film in 1989. I don't know is there an order that all of this should be viewed in? Does anybody know?
