why the Japanese spacecraft didn't accelerate toward Gorath and use the slingshot effect to overcome it's intense gravitational pull or for that matter send up multiple spacecraft to act as gravity tugs and ease Gorath away from an Earth intercept. OOps, I guess no movie.

If Gorath is 600x the mass of earth and one handful of its soil weighs one ton, you would never be able to alter its course using space ships as gravity tugs. That would be like using a remote control boat to tug the titanic away from the glacier.
