I am very curious if there is any more information on their father, their relationship etc (or anything else about their family or childhood) from the book. The movie paints an image, but it seems like such a complicated and interesting situation I'd like to know more.
The movie paints a good image in Jane's head, maybe. He was kind of cruel to Blanche.

by good image, I didn't mean positive image, just that the movie gives us a decent idea on what type of guy he is. I was just curious if anything that wasn't shown in a movie regrding him was in the book.
Specifically I am interested in how his relationship with Jane progressed after she stopped being relevant

Been some years since I've re-read the novel, but I seem to remember a mention that their parents died in the Influenza epidemic of 1918.
In my case, self-absorption is completely justified.
