Jane's alcoholism

The one thing I found a little unbelievable about this story is Jane's alcoholism. If she really drank so much, it's hard to believe she could do all the things she does. Alcohol is a depressant, so it impairs your ability to do very much.

I think you have to suspend disbelief. We see Jane drinking a lot, but we don't really know if she was staggering drunk 24/7.

She may have been a "functioning alcoholic," able to pull herself together enough to get things done.

reply

Yes, she was a ''Functioning Nut''. Alcohol, or no alcohol, there wouldn't have been much difference. And, the drinking went by the wayside pretty early on, anyway.

Never heard of a functioning alcoholic?

It's implied in the book and film that Jane's drinking is cyclical, that she goes for periods of time without drinking, until something sets her off and begins a new cycle, resulting in erratic behavior and finally drinking. Remember that Blanche is not really alarmed when Elvira says "You know she's been drinking again?" Of course, she deflects it with "I hadn't noticed," but of course she had, because she's well-aware of the pattern.

Harold, that makes good sense. If the drinking wasn't continuous, it wouldn't impair her as much. Thanks.

I like the functional alcoholic reasoning better!

I know plenty of alcoholics who leave a normal life and function 'normally' (whatever that is).
It is well known that Winston ran WW2 while every day having a sherry for breakfast (late breaky, midday), champagne for lunch, and then scotch whiskey till the early hours of the morning. And he won the war!

I don't get this question. Jane doesn't DO anything. Are you being sarcastic? She totally seems like someone who drinks all day.

The OP stated: "If she really drank so much, it's hard to believe she could do all the things she does."

If you think about it, Jane apparently ran the house. We see her fixing Blanche's lunch and dinner trays -- with all the mayhem she caused there. She cleaned the birdcage -- and let the bird escape. She deals with and pays Elvira. And, we see her driving to the newspaper office to place an ad. Then, she deals with Edwin.

Jane, indeed, enjoyed her alcohol, but I never got the impression that she was too drunk to function on some level.
