Did Blanche Die ?

I've seen this movie about five times and I always wondered if Blanche dies or is rescued just in time. The movie ends with the police running up to where she is lying down on the beach and that's it . I assume she lives and jane is arrested and probably sent to a mental hospital somewhere .The ending leaves you guessing.

reply

I think she lived but the ending does leave you guessing

reply

Though it's left open-ended things don't look all that good for her.

reply

she had to die!! She ruined her sister's life!! By all the laws of movie justice, Blanche had to die at the end!! :)

reply

Well yes she did, but karma saw her sister ruining her life.

If it's any solace for you, like I said, things didn't look good at the end of the film.

reply

You think that's a big punishment? That's why she confessed, to let her know at the very end she was always the one in control. She died, but you know what's worse? Continuing life as Jane.

Sure Jane felt liberated at that point after hearing it and escaped into insanity, but her whole life was wasted for something she wasn't even guilty for, and now she will be institutionalized and spend remaining years in her twisted world.

reply

Was Blanche sincere? Did she really cause the accident? I did miss the beginning of the movie.

reply

Did she really cause the accident?

Yes, she did.

That was the twist ending: We spend the film thinking that Jane is a demented monster -- only to find out that Blanche has been diabolically deceptive all those years.

Another way to look at it is that Blanche created a monster in Jane -- and that monster turned on her.

This question has been asked before. The film leaves it open ended.

I always felt that she lived. But, whether she lived or died would be anticlimactic to the story that has just played out.

One thing is certain: Jane wound up in some "nice little place where they could look after her." 

Always thought it would have been interesting if Jane Hudson ended up at the same place Norma Desmond was . . . imagine the entertainment they could have provided to the other residents. . .

In my case, self-absorption is completely justified.

What a riot that would be.  

They'd probably try to KILL one another over the spotlight! 😨

I think it would've been more interesting if Jane wound up where NORMAN BATES did!

^Muahahahahahahahah. I can just hear her voice.

But, I do think that Blanche died.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Watch the ending again, and pay attention to the body language of the policemen in the last shot. They aren't moving quickly to help her. She's already dead at that time.

reply

I watched this film last night for the second time, it was on TV. At the very end I tried to pay special attention to the last scene, which is hard because it zooms out and so you have to squint as the policemen are so tiny. At first glance it looks like they walk over to Blanche and then one stands there and the other kneels, and that's it (after all, the films finished) but on second closer viewing it looks like the kneeling policeman looks up at the one standing and shakes his head. Then it looks like he pulls the blanket over her head. I couldn't check this for certain though, as it was on TV and not a DVD.

reply

You are correct, vallartalover77006. Watching the movie as a young boy, I thought that she might have lived, out of empathy for the Blanche character, but after viewing it again as an adult, the film language says she died on the beach.

reply

But first Jane would have to stand trial for the murder of Elvira.

reply

It is up to you, but I always thought they got to her in time. In my mind she lived, but had a long hard recovery.

reply

One of the things I like about the movie is the open ending. While I'm positive they will take Jane away, I'm not so sure if Blanche will survive...

I'm looking at a different question. Suppose Blanche survives and Jane to be committed, what would happen to Blanche?

She'll probably be in some assisted living facility or in the care of some other relative.

reply

I'm watching it now, and on the chance Blanche does live, she'd end up in the Motion Picture/Television home, most likely after being in critical condition for some time. I would think she'd be in emotional turmoil after what she revealed and arrange for Jane to be there too, although in a completely different ward that helps the mentally ill, senile or in need of constant supervision. She would be too deranged to not get a sanity plea for Elvira's death. Other than malnutrition and dehydration, she was fairly healthy prior to Jane's kickfest.
