Is Top gun a remake of this?

I don't really see a similarity to Top Gun. I do, however, see a character similarity between Buzz (Steve McQueen) and Robert Duvall's role as Bull in The Great Santini. Both characters' over-the-top attitudes impacted the people around them. Even the way the two characters meet their fates is identical.

If Top Gun is a remake of anything, it's a remake of Men of the Fighting Lady from 1954. I'm not saying it is, but it's a closer match than Top Gun and The War Lover.
