What was the effing point?! Spoilers

Comedies from this era never appeal to me, but I don't even understand how a *fan* of 60s humor could call this a "comedy." Really, I'm surprised this message board is so devoid of activity. I'd expect more viewers to come here, voicing their questions and sharing in eachothers confusion.
Maybe I'm the only weirdo who doesn't get it, but I felt like the film was a pretty sober and depressing story of people who in different ways, failed completely to understand what love is- or at least failed completely to attain it. That's the only message I was able to walk away with.
If I'm wrong, then this was a pointless movie about a cheating man who never gets what he wants, a sad sorry girl who wants love and settles for a man who practically attacks her, and a wife who doesn't love her husband, but sees him as a possession, and pridefully clings to him, determined to keep all of the things that are "hers."
It's a dissatisfying film to watch.. Dissatisfying I guess because so many of the characters are so true to life.. and the lives of the leads are so vain, empty, and pointless.
Not uplifting in the least.. dull and frustrating to endure.

lkfitz... pls see my conclusions in the COMMENT section here, and see if you agree....you're right, the characters are true to life, like watching "virginia woolf"... but there is humor in "waltz" / ksf-2

Long before I knew about this film I saw a 1972 Revival of the play with Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson & Diana Van der Vlis in the leads at the uptown Circle in the Sq here in NYC.

I went mostly for the 3 of them having seen them in film and of course TV.
For the most part while the acting was first rate I didn't care much for the story line.

For those who don't know Diana she was the lead in "X" The Man with the Xray Eyes

I started watching this film, I'll see the rest tonight if I don't get bored with it too soon.

I'm in a play reading group in which we just read this play by Jean Anouilh. IMO, the play is not at all comedic -- it treats a variety of typical human's "solutions" in their quest for love and satisfaction as self-defeating mistakes. This film adaptation is (IMO) a bit more comedic or funny than the play on which it was based. This play by Anouilh is considered by the author as one of his several "grating plays."

You ask what is the effing point but then you go on to say: I felt like the film was a pretty sober and depressing story of people who in different ways, failed completely to understand what love is- or at least failed completely to attain it. That's the only message I was able to walk away with.

I think you understood and got the point quite well.
