jean-luc tarantino

first let me say IMO godard is an infinitely superior director to tarantino.

i know tarantino is a big jlg fan, did anyone find themselves thinking of pulp fiction in this

stuff i noticed:
a)anna karinas hairstyle similiar to uma thurmans in pulp
b)in the philosophical talk with the older man she mentions how we feel the need to talk when we dont need to and sometimes no talk is better. like in pulp when thurman says "That's when you know you've found somebody special. When you can just shut the *beep* up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence"
c)also the scene in which karina dances in the hotel reminded me of the dance scene in pulp though thats a pretty slight resemblence i suppose.

so i can see this was one of many classic films tarantino was inspired by/ripped off depending on your viewpoint

One might also want to check out the Louise Brooks character from "Pandora's Box" (see: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018737/)who not only wears the same exact hairstyle as Anna Karina in this film, but is also a prostitute facing similar circumstances as Nana. Curiously enough, the references page on IMDb doesn't mention this connection at all, though the homage was clearly intended.

It's with this that my personal qualms with Tarantino's oeuvre and particularly "Pulp Fiction" arise, because though both of their film's seem to be in communication with cinema history (sometimes also in contention with it) Godard's homage seems more artful and perhaps more relevant to the central themes/ideas of the film, that is perhaps an existentialist tragedy and a more philosophical take on the human condition; the relevance of Tarantino's homage seems tenuous at best, almost simply an "homage for the sake of homage," not unlike navel-gazing.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I still think QT is a good filmmaker in his own respect, it's these flaws that keep him from being great.

Godard may be more self-serious about what he's doing, but he's still sketching his character in the image of iconic movie characters from the past (Maria Falconetti and Louise Brooks). To me there's not that big of a difference, both filmmakers are using cinematic citations as a shorthand to inform the development of their character.

Maybe if Tarantino went around in dark glasses muttering gnomic aphorisms, his work would be considered a bit more artful. Similarly, I wonder if Godard's rigorous, artful style would be as widely enjoyed if he didn't film such a lovely actress, often in frivolous scenes. Actually, we know the answer to that one, as only hardcore fans of art cinema like Godard's work after he parted ways with Karina.

I picked up on all three of the Pulp Fiction relations you just mentioned.

Another film that PF is rife with references to is 'Jules and Jim.'
One needs look no further than the title to see evidence.

i cant find any references to JAJ apart from the titular reference :/

"Godard is an infinitely superior director to Tarantino".

With each new JLG film I see, such an estimation feels less and less right. Tarantino´s last 4 films may range from barely mediocre (Kill Bill 2) to outright sh-t (Death Proof... although it´s hardly worse than Godard´s 2 Or 3 Things I Know About Her), but Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction & Res Dogs are all better than anything I seen from the Frenchman - with the exception of Pierrot Le Fou.

having posted this year ago i confess i now hold a much more similar opinion to you.

i do feel tarantino has lost his way, and despair of how overrated he is but there's not denying godard lost his way a lot earlier and probably more catastrophically.

furthermore. pierrot le fou is a masterpiece. (but again its a film which godard himself confesses to not fully understand. - i seem to recall)

Yes I just watched this Movie today and totally loved it.

Yes those are all great similarities but also I picked up on a few more! I was thinking of Pulp and tarantinos general style a lot while watching this film.

Some others things QT obviously loved lol

1) the whole divide by chapters thing which he has done is the majority if his films

2) also uma thurman dancing in pulp and Nana danced in My life

3) In pulp fiction there is the french lover of Butch, who reminded me a lot of Nana also, she was even french

4) and a few long camera shots such as when Nana is in the record store. which is fantastic. QT loves to make things long camera shots

so yeah I am pretty sure QT loves this movie lol
