Pretentious?

I'm irritated. I got called "pretentious" and "a film snob" because I like this movie.

I happen to like a LOT of foreign movies and indie films, but I don't discredit big Hollywood flicks for it. I still like shelling out $8.50 and seeing the latest installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean". So how am I pretentious? Grrrr.

All films are pretentious. This is one of the better ones.

And she did smile

I wish ticket prices here are still $8.50. I have to shell out $11-$12 for movie tickets.

Nobody even knows what pretentious means anymore. I think that thick people use it when they feel that their intelligence is being threatened

I definitely agree with this.

Plus, considering all cinema (like theatre and novels) is about pretence, to apply the label 'pretentious' to a film always seemed ludicrous to me.

Your not alone, I think all Godard fans must face the "Pretentious" branding now and then. I think its all a matter of taste,

And therein lies the paradox for me. I love Godard's movies, but mostly for (what I'm sure his biggest fans would consider) the wrong reasons. I just happen to love weird movies, and Godard is more unpredictable than a Monty Python skit (though maybe less so here than in some of his other movies). Even while watching this film, I greatly enjoyed the quick peeks at nude hookers and lingering shots of Karina unbuttoning her blouse and revealing her bra. Is that the only reason I watched it? Of course not! But, damn, if that wasn't a highlight! So if you watch high-brow movies for mostly low-brow reasons, can you still be said to be pretentious?

My friend, all movies are pretentious, even Miss Blair Witch.
